The talk about promoting an international DJ to a club came by the end of April. We got some offers to book DJs from Spain and Germany and our choice went to Eric Entrena, a Barcelona-based ex Space resident, producer and owner of Toro Recordings.
Why Eric? Because, having heard some of his mix samples we definitely fell in love with his underground style. Some of his tracks are indeed named a bit 'controversially harsh' - This Shit is Music for example, as a protest to the mainstream music losing more and more of its quality.
We contacted Eric's agent and then set up for a club hunt. Finally Blackpearl landed the gig, because they were the first one to deal with us. We then experienced the long bureaucracy processes for immigration and working visa and stuff. Blackpearl was really a big help, they did a lot of promotions around Jakarta for Eric, and a good teamwork brought a good result.
More than two weeks before Day D, all promotion strategies were already begun, from radio to websites and other online means, sms, flyering, magazine ad, etc. Need to say there was a lot of work, but we really enjoyed it.
At the event, our friend and DJ Ferre also had the opportunity to play, so he and his former partner were also a big big help for us. Eric arrived in Jakarta on Day D, around 5 PM, from Bali where he had his previous gig at the Deejay Club - we went to pick him up at the airport and brought him to the hotel in Kemang, then went back to Blackpearl to prepare the night.
Blackpearl was filled up pretty early, Ferre with the opening set, followed by Blackpearl residents Bimo and Bone. Then at around half past midnight Eric finally started to play and it was great!!! Well, during the evening we'd started to get to know about the DJ more, and he's simply great - not only the skills but also the personality. Eric is a blast behind the deck. That night his style changed a bit, less underground, adapting to the crowd - people just loved it.
Eric put all the good ol' tunes, with his remixing hands, these songs turned to be some sort of branded hot new stuff, playing with creativity, filling the dancefloor with insatiable dancers.
The event finished a bit early though, around 3 AM Eric finally finished playing, continued by another Blackpearl resident. We appreciated very much all the people who've helped us in the event, and most of all, Blackpearl and Eric who made everything happen.
As a conclusion, we were happy of this first experience of promoting an international DJ. People think it's difficult, well it is, but it's fun and even though you work much, you'll love it.
So, maybe we'll do the experience again in the next year, and maybe we'll make Eric return too - who knows, just wait for it! Cheers!
