Having been working on Kampus' grand launching online promo and its very web for about a month now, it was with a surmounted excitement that I finally saw Friday coming as a promise to see and experience
the club for myself.
I remembered the two previous establishments at the place - the first one called JJ closed not long after I arrived in Jakarta a few years back, and the second one, Pure, was acquired by Stadium Group
a few months ago. Both premises only occupied the 35th floor, the 36th and 37th always belonged to someone else.
But when the idea of Kampus came around the blueprint stage, the shareholders decided to give a total makeover and that included both highest floors, the 36th and the actual rooftop of 37th floor in the
plan.
A first-ever 3-story night venue atop a metropolitan skyscraper in Jakarta was born when the decision was finalized.
The management deciding that they would change everything, Kampus underwent a major renovation for several months. Completely changing the interiors, the setting, the brand identity and the music.
Rather than opting for progressive trance like its elder sister Stadium, Kampus went into the direction of house genre, targeting A+ market who seek for luxury, comfort and quality when it comes to night
entertainment matters.
You can find various things in Kampus: A great nightclub for your great night outs, a fine dining option for your inner
gourmandise, a modern urban karaoke to satisfy your singing dreams, and a sky alfresco lounge - every premise coming with the fab advantage of a 360 degree view at Jakarta's landscape, a busy
bee's nest humming and vibrating with the capital city activities on daylight which transforms into a beautiful shimmering sea of neon colors and endless shapes of artificial lights from dusk till
dawnbreak.
If you like going out early to start your clubbing night, then it would be wise to look for a place where you can have various things at the same spot, which saves time and transportation in the traffic
jam. Kampus being a place that provides activities often preliminary to clubbing - dining, karaoke and chill out session - you can be sure you will love spending your night here.
Living in the Big Durian, I can assure you we are spoiled rotten when it is about clubbing and nightlife, what with all the great clubs Jakarta possesses, and all the night events with international big
name DJs. Choosing where to spend your night isn't easy, but Kampus surely will be a serious option from now on in the clubbing scene.
So when I came round at 10 pm on Friday night, all I saw was a great night ahead, and not minding the queue of people beautifully dressed and styled up to the max, I used my press priviledge and rushed
in the lift and jabbed number 35.
The lift door opened to a marvelous black-and-glass hall - the antichamber of all the venue - and I saw people, people and people. Obviously it hadn't been only me excited with the grand opening.
I quickly did a tour of the 35th floor, walking past tables, occassionally with people I know, stopped here and there to say hello. The Stadium people were there, as also the Kampus marketing team who
did a great job organizing the Grand Launching.
The 35th floor was large enough to host over a thousand people. It was hard to walk around, but I managed to did a full tour before I snatched some refreshments off the bar and headed to the media table.
As all launching parties should be, Kampus had spread invitations to the four corners of Jakarta, and it seemed that each and every one of their invitees did show up.
I helped myself to delicious finger foods and made a mental note to go back and check the full course dinner - if the
appetizers were that tasty, what about the main course, then?
Meanwhile, the silver-haired senior DJ Tosse, normally home to the 2nd floor at Stadium now extending his residency to Kampus, was playing housey tunes faithful to Kampus' music direction.
As the night went on, I came close to a glass pane and realized, this was a feature that would play in Kampus' success which I believe will be soonest. I liked the aspect of being in the heights without
really having a vertigo so I was happy to observe Jakarta city lights from afar from the glass windows. Curious to take a peek on the rooftop, I climbed two sets of stairs and arrived at the landing above.
The view was breathtaking and the sensation of being outside that high, knowing that those street sidewalks were that far, was just undescribable. I promised myself to come back check the hanging gardens
when it would be completely done.
Going back to the 35th floor, I was shocked to see that the spacious room went even fuller with more new arrivals within a space of 15 minutes. I followed all the events - lucky draws, quizzes, dancers,
and went to see Balearic Soul.
The guys were the simplest of men - down-to-earth and nice, and I made a personal request to them: Ole and most certainly, Fish Go Deep's The Cure & The Cause, their remix voted best by DJmag a couple
years back.
The guys honored Kampus' decks for the very first time as an international event. And as the opening kicked off, I was so glad to hear that familiar song was chosen to start with: it was The Cure & The
Cause!
Fishing for faces to snap, in the dense crowd I wandered around the cylindrical Kampus with my camera, enjoying music and ambience as Balearic Soul continued.
Getting the best of the night, I planned to come back soon to Kampus, to taste more cocktails, more fine dishes, and try out the karaoke room.
Time whiles away when you like your time, and the first time I took glance at my wrist, the watch already showed 3 AM.
A succesful night, I must say. This promises a lot for the future. A lot more nights to come at Kampus - which actually had been an endearment term, a nickname for Stadium in the past, now coming into
reality as the 3-story venue whose grand launching I just attended.
Closing the note with a recommendation for you to stop by at Kampus next time you drive past Kuningan, I must say, Jakarta has gained another good player in the clubbing map, and the diversity will make
of our city a real clubbing destination for great events in the next years to come.
